The National Naval Aviation Museum charges no admission, opens daily at 9 a.m., closes at 4 p.m., and sits aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola at 1750 Radford Boulevard. Without a military ID, you’ll come in through the West Gate, down at the southern tip of Blue Angel Parkway, which admits visitors from 9 each morning up to 3 in the afternoon, and every adult 18 or older has to show a valid U.S. passport or a REAL ID.

That ID rule catches plenty of first-time visitors off guard, so we put this guide together for guests heading over from Splash RV Resort. From our front gate it’s about 34 miles to the West Gate, so plan on roughly an hour each way, and get rolling early because the gate stops letting visitors in at 3 p.m. even though the museum stays open until 4.

National Naval Aviation Museum quick facts

  • Admission: free, and parking is free too.
  • Hours: doors open at 9 a.m., and closing time is 4 p.m., seven days a week.
  • Visitor gate: the West Gate on Blue Angel Parkway, open to the public daily from 9 a.m., with a 3 p.m. cutoff.
  • ID: a valid U.S. passport or REAL ID for anyone 18 or older.
  • Bags: clear totes or small clutch purses only inside the museum. Backpacks and coolers stay in the car.
  • From Splash RV Resort: about an hour each way to the museum.

Can civilians visit the National Naval Aviation Museum in 2026?

Yes, civilians can visit the National Naval Aviation Museum in 2026 without a military sponsor. The installation’s West Gate, where Blue Angel Parkway ends at the base, admits the public every day of the week, starting at 9 a.m. and wrapping up at 3 p.m. U.S. citizens 18 or older must show a valid U.S. passport or a REAL ID.

Drivers need the same ID. Foreign nationals can come along, but a U.S. citizen has to drive them in the same vehicle. Persons with felony convictions are not authorized to access the base. The museum’s FAQ page also says all vehicles and personnel are subject to security searches and background checks, so budget a little time at the gate.

Here’s how to make the gate go smoothly:

  1. Pack a passport or REAL ID for every adult in the car, the driver included.
  2. Set your map app for Blue Angel Parkway and follow it south to the West Gate.
  3. Arrive after 9 a.m. and before 3 p.m. Morning is easier, since you’ll get the full day inside.
  4. Leave weapons behind. NAS Pensacola prohibits firearms and knives, including for Concealed Weapon Permit holders, and it prohibits boats and boat trailers too.
  5. Expect your vehicle to be searched at the entry checkpoint.

What are the National Naval Aviation Museum hours?

The National Naval Aviation Museum welcomes visitors every day, Monday through Sunday, opening at 9 a.m. and closing at 4 p.m. The museum’s FAQ lists it closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, and its Plan Your Visit page adds Christmas Eve, so check before a Dec. 24 trip. The Hangar Bay One annex closes earlier, at 3:30 p.m.

Free guided tours start at the main information desk at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily, and they’re led by volunteer docents, many of them military veterans. Trust us, take the tour if you can. For lunch, the Cubi Bar Café serves Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., from September through May, and the Top Gun Café keeps the same daily hours as the museum. One heads-up: no outside food is allowed in the museum, and only water in a container with a secured lid can come inside.

Do you need tickets for the National Naval Aviation Museum?

No, you don’t need a ticket for the National Naval Aviation Museum itself, because admission is free. Tickets only come into play for the extras: the giant-screen theater and the flight simulators. The museum is a cashless venue, so bring a card. Here’s what the add-ons cost right now, per the museum’s giant screen theater page and flight simulator page.

What’s inside the national museum of naval aviation in Pensacola, Florida?

Pensacola’s National Naval Aviation Museum displays more than 150 restored Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard aircraft inside over 350,000 square feet of exhibit space and outside on its 37-acre grounds. In the museum’s own words, it’s “the world’s largest Naval Aviation museum and one of the most-visited museums in the state of Florida.”

Don’t miss these highlights:

  • The Blue Angels atrium: four A-4 Skyhawks hang in the team’s famous diamond formation. It’s the type of airplane the Blue Angels flew from 1974 to 1986.
  • The NC-4 flying boat: the NC-4 reached Lisbon, Portugal, on May 27, 1919, completing the first successful transatlantic flight.
  • The Skylab command module: it carried an all-Navy crew of Pete Conrad, Paul Weitz and Joseph Kerwin, who spent 28 days in orbit in May and June 1973.
  • The USS Cabot flight deck: a replica of the light carrier’s wooden flight deck and island superstructure, per the museum’s exhibit page.
  • A presidential helicopter: the VH-3A Sea King on display flew with HMX-1 during the presidencies of Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford.
  • The Cubi Bar Café: its decor and layout duplicate the bar area of the famous Cubi Point Officers Club, plaques and all.

Strollers are welcome in the museum and on the flight line, and wheelchairs can be checked out at no charge from the Information Desk.

RVers, our advice is to keep the rig parked and plugged in at your site, then take the tow vehicle. The museum does have a limited number of spaces for motorhomes, RVs and buses toward the back of the museum parking lot near the Hangar Bay One annex, but it’s a lot easier to roll in with a car.

Do the Blue Angels practice in Pensacola during winter?

No, winter isn’t Blue Angels practice season at NAS Pensacola. The museum’s posted 2025 practice dates ran from April through October, and the squadron spends winter at El Centro, California, its primary winter training base, according to the Imperial Valley Press.

When the season is on, the museum’s FAQ says Blue Angels practices and autograph sessions cost nothing and are open to everyone, and the best place to watch is the flight line behind the museum buildings. On the practice schedule page, autograph sessions follow the practice flights on certain Wednesday mornings in the museum atrium. So if you’re planning a spring trip, check that page before you book. The four A-4 Skyhawks in the atrium hang there year-round, so winter visitors still get their Blue Angels fix!

What else can you see on NAS Pensacola?

Two more historic stops sit on NAS Pensacola, a short drive from the aviation museum: the Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum at 2081 Radford Boulevard, and Fort Barrancas, part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Visitors without a military ID reach both through the West Gate.

When should you plan your National Naval Aviation Museum trip?

Late fall through early spring is a sweet spot for the National Naval Aviation Museum, because so much of it is indoors and the weather near Pensacola stays mild. NOAA’s climate normals for Pensacola’s airport show November averaging 71.8°F for the high and 51.0°F for the low, while December comes in at 65.1°F and 45.9°F.

That makes the museum a perfect cool-day or rainy-day pick for winter visitors and snowbirds. Arrive in the morning and you can still catch the 9:30 a.m. guided tour. And if you’re with us over Veterans Day, Splash RV Resort is serving complimentary coffee and donuts at 8 AM in the Great Lodge on Wednesday, November 11, as we honor our veterans. Grab a cup, then head west for the day.
